Don’t Get Fooled Into Buying Fake Security Software

As expected, we are intercepting a lot of new Scareware (most that claim to be the latest 2011 release).  System Tools 2011 is one such example (displayed below).  Thirtyseven4 customers are fully protected against this threat.  We strongly recommend that you extreme caution this holiday season when visiting websites, reading your emails, clicking through website links within social networking sites like Facebook, etc.  We have posted a website dedicated in providing information on Scareware here.  We also provide schools, universities, business and government agencies free Scareware informational posters upon request.  If interested in the posters or a no-obligation quote for Thirtyseven4 Antivirus licenses fill out or Quote Form located here or email your request to sales@thirtyseven4.com.

Scareware:  Same Tactic Different Type of Software

Our virus lab recently came across an interesting new piece of Scareware.  Unlike the usual style of Scareware we are seeing and updating for daily (the ones pretending to be fake security applications), this one claims to be a Hard Drive Optimization Tool.  However, the object is the same, to scare a user into purchasing phony software.  Thirtyseven4 Antivirus users are fully protected against this threat.  I have included a screenshot of the threat below:

E-MAIL SCAMS ON THE INCREASE

Over the coming weeks I will be posting a series of different e-mail based scams we’ve been intercepting.  Most of the scams involve some sort of investment opportunities.  It is my assumption that spammers realize that this is the time of the year when family funds run low (due to all the holiday shopping) and thus are more willing to “invest” or seek a “loan” or the time of year when hearts are more generous and more open to giving.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Today is Turkey Day!  We wish you and your families a blessed and safe Thanksgiving. In observance of Thanksgiving, the Thirtyseven4 offices will be closed today and Friday.  However, the virus research team and premium support team will still be hard at work keeping you safe.

Remember to use extreme caution when browsing Black Friday search terms and reading through your inbox.  As previously reported, cybercriminals are out in full force trying to capitalize on this holiday time.  I’ve posted a few articles for further reading:

Fake Black Friday Websites Remain a Top Source of Rogueware

With the search term “Black Friday ads” soaring in popularity this week (#1 on most sites tracking search terms), we are again advising consumers looking to get a sneak peek at this deals to use extreme caution.  As noted yesterday, malware authors have already begun exploiting these search terms and they are continuing to do so.

The Name of Popular Retail Chain Best Buy Used To Spread Scareware

As you can seen from the image below, it has been recently discovered that the cybercriminals have begun using the curiosity of holiday shoppers against them by poisoning popular search terms of the season.  In the case below the term ‘Best Buy Black Friday Deals’ resulted in a poisoned link that if visited would download the fake security application, Internet Security Suite.

In order to get awareness out to the public about such scams, our team has posted the following press release that contains information about how to avoid falling victim to these attacks.  The press release can be seen here.

SCAREWARE v.2011 MAKING ITS ARRIVAL

With the year 2011 rapidly approaching, it appears that scareware authors are wasting no time getting their latest creations updated to reflect 2011.  It is very typical for legitimate security vendors to release their upcoming programs for the next year in the November and December timeframe.  We have recently updated for a new malware Trojan.FakeSE.2011.  Trojan.FakeSE.2011 disguises itself as MS Security Essentials 2011.  I have posted a sample screenshot below and a complete description can be seen from here.  Thirtyseven4 Antivirus customers are 100% protected against this threat.

What’s the Deal with the No Subject Emails

We’ve recently had a chance to field some questions from the Akron Beacon Journal and various users regarding the increase in emails coming from friends and family that contain only a blank subject and a mere website link in the body message. See below

Anyhow, as a result to the increase in questions, we have decided to post a small question and answer page on our website concerning this topic instead of a large blog post.  You can read more about this subject by clicking here.

Scareware Authors Getting More Aggressive

According to a blog post by security firm Trend Micro, it appears that an update server for Kaspersky Labs may have been compromised.  The hacked site led multiple Kaspersky users to post comments in various forums about their experience of inadvertently downloading a piece of Scareware called Security Tools from this site.  I believe the following action goes to show the great lengths and risks these authors will go to get their creations downloaded (in hopes to extort money from unsuspecting users).  You can read more about the blog from here.

10/10/10

If you are in the security field, you may have found yourself being the recipient of the following question over the weekend- “will there be some big computer virus outbreak on 10-10-10 that will take down the Internet?”  In my 12 years of experience in the antivirus field, I have found that certain superstitious dates usually stir up more anxiety and worries than actual harm.  Think back to the turn of the new Millennium or more routine dates like Friday the 13th.  The truth is everyday, regardless of the date, new threats emerge and that is why Thirtyseven4 is updated for thousands of new pieces of malware daily.  It is also why Thirtyseven4 and its partners literally work around the clock keeping our users protected.
