Antivirus Company Thirtyseven4 Releases 2014 Security Predictions

CyptoLocker success and fortunes likely to pave way for copycats; increase in human shielding practices probable as cybercriminals gain stealth in disguising tracks

MEDINA, Ohio, December 12 – Thirtyseven4, LLC, a leading provider of Windows, Mac and Android antivirus solutions, released today its top five security predictions for the twelve months ahead.  After careful collaboration of thoughts and ideas, Security experts at Thirtyseven4 have narrowed their predictions for 2014 to five, and at the top is a greater focus by cybercriminals on file encryption-based Malware.

“The days of malware being written as a form of digital graffiti or for name recognition are long gone”, stated Steven Sundermeier, Owner of Thirtyseven4, LLC.  “With rising popularity (notoriety!) in 2013, human shielding tactics, botnets, etc. will continue to plague victims in 2014.  Malware authors progress in creating new methods to keep themselves hidden while cloaking their sins under the disguise of innocent victims.  Stay alert for more of this in the coming year,” concluded Sundermeier.

Thirtyseven4 security predications for 2014 include:

1. Focus on File Encryption Malware (aka. Ransomware).
With the unfortunate monetary and distribution success of CyptoLocker, cybercriminals will likely try to replicate its havoc.  Ransomware can be understood as “cyber Black-mail”.

2. Increase in Human Shielding practices.
The term “human shield” in this context is in reference to an attacker or some group breaching the computer security policy of lower profile organizations (usually by means of malware) and taking over their computers with the purpose to target high-level businesses or financial institutions.

3. Target based attacks.
Cybercriminals are getting good at locating security holes in your computer armor and chokepoints, and are then developing malware to specifically target these openings and weak links. Watch for increased attacks on Windows XP once Microsoft pulls support.

4.  Mobile Device Malware increases.
With the increase in regular personal banking activity from mobile devices, they become desirable/profitable targets for Malware authors.  Shared information via social networks is another area of vulnerability that will continue to entice attacks to exploit and write malicious code on the mobile platform with greater reoccurrence.

5. Continuation of Botnets.
Look for botnets to cross breed with other botnets for greater effectiveness.
